The GTA 6 release date time frame has been narrowed down based the Borderlands 4 release date and comments from executives. The latest sequel in the popular franchise from Gearbox finally got its release date last night during PlayStation’s State of Play event. This now gives us a much smaller window for when GTA 6 is coming, at least for now.
Even as recent as last week, Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive, reiterated GTA VI will launch in Fall 2025. As we are getting ever closer, fans have been desperate for news and worries of a delay have grown despite the doubling down of a launch this year. The Borderlands 4 news gives more hope of GTA 6 actually coming out this year and here’s why.
How Borderlands 4 Affects GTA 6
Gearbox announced at the most recent PlayStation State of Play that Borderlands 4 is coming out on September 23rd. To some, this is a little bit earlier than expected. Gearbox is owned by Take-Two much like Rockstar Games are. Back in November, Take Two Interactive told investors Borderlands 4 was still targeting a release between April 1st 2025 and March 31st 2026. This was well after a Fall 2025 time period was confirmed for GTA 6.
The company’s CEO Strauss Zelnick said in an interview on the same day that Borderlands 4 and GTA VI won’t release close together: “I think it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t, and no one would, stack up huge releases unnecessarily”.
This means GTA 6 won’t be releasing in September this year. However, it does leave room for it to come out at the end of October (to give Borderlands 4 breathing room) or in November. If it needs an extra month in the oven, there’s always December. That said, even a month is probably not enough time to have Borderlands 4 free from GTA 6. Rockstar’s next game is the most anticipated game of all time. It is outpacing GTA V which was already monstrous. Either game could still be delayed; that’s just video game development.

Setting The Record Straight
Some fans took to social media last night with claims Borderlands 4’s release date means GTA 6 is delayed. Their reason is they thought Take-Two previously said Borderlands 4 would release after GTA 6. This is not entirely true.
This common misconception likely comes from Take-Two’s reports saying this: “we also plan to release PGA TOUR 2K25 and WWE 2K25 in March, Mafia: The Old Country in the Summer, Grand Theft Auto VI in the Fall, and Borderlands 4 before year-end.” Their presentations also listed their slate in release order, since last year.
Before the Borderlands 4 release date, many assumed all of those games were in release order as PGA, WWE and Mafia all have confirmed release dates in that order. So the theory was GTA 6 is up next with Borderlands 4 out in say December or even early 2026. Now it appears that was just a wrong assumption or Borderlands 4 was moved up internally to avoid GTA 6 coming later in Fall.
In reality, Borderlands was listed after GTA VI as it did not have a more narrow time scale. Games like Judas and Project ETHOS have no release date and were listed after Borderlands. Judas for example was previously looking to release before March 2025 and but it is now listed as TBA.
In other GTA 6 news, Rockstar’s parent company’s CEO teased a PC release at some point plus he shut down concerns of AI and violence. The game is still targeting a Fall 2025 release and that helped surge the stock price of Take-Two.
