We knew that many people would be pre-ordering GTA 6 however a new report has revealed it’s on a scale unlike anything we’ve seen before. A new report from analytics firm Sensor Tower has revealed just how far ahead grand Theft Auto VI is in comparison to the biggest games of the past six years.
The data collected by Sensor Tower for this report only contains digital pre-orders made in the United States. Therefore it’s missing physical boxed pre-orders and any sales outside of the States. That said, this is a fairly good representation given the US is the biggest market for most of the games listed and majority of these titles were purchased overwhelmingly digitally anyway.
From 149 days to 45 days before launch, GTA VI has sold 148% more copies via pre-orders than 2022’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. That title is one of the best selling games of the past 6 years and had the most pre-orders of game before GTA VI. That is a massive gap. For context, MW2 earned $800m in its opening weekend. The chart also displays just how popular the GTA VI Ultimate Edition is alone. It is not far off the base version of the game and is more than 100% higher than MW2. Both versions dwarf games such as Diablo 4, Hogwarts Legacy, Spider-Man 2 and The Last of Us Part II; all had great pre-order numbers but nothing pales in comparison to GTA VI.
As of this week, Sensor Tower reports the game has been pre-ordered over 6.45m times and has made an estimated $630. That’s nearly GTA V’s 24 hour number and the game isn’t even out yet. More than $36m worth of pre-orders were made last week which is up $4m compared to the prior week. That’s another 380,000 copies. XBOX’s market share has also risen by 1% in the 2 weeks but only to 26% of the pre-orders.
