Rockstar Games have announced they are sponsoring a former world champion boxer as he looks to mentor and train an up and coming fighter. Fans will be saying “we’ve got Rockstar Games getting into boxing before GTA 6 release” following this unrelated announcement.
In a surprising reveal via an Instagram Reel, the gaming company say they are “excited” to be sponsoring George “Saint George” Groves as he trains Lucas Roehrig. In case you aren’t aware, Groves is an ex-British, Commonwealth, European & WBA super-middleweight champion.
“We wish them the very best on their road to the top!” said Rockstar Games alongside an accompanying video. It sees Groves training Roehrig in the ring plus Roehrig wearing a jacket with the Rockstar Games logo on the back. You can see an image of it below.
The former boxer also shared the video to his Instagram page. In the caption Groves wrote “I am excited to announce that I will be both training and managing the incredible talent that is ‘LightsOut’ Lucas Roehrig. Lucas is without doubt the best and most exciting prospect I’ve seen since retiring from boxing and I am delighted that he has chosen me to be the man to help guide him to the top. More huge news in the coming weeks, so follow him now and join the journey!” He also said “Thanks so much for the support @RockstarGames” on an Instagram story.
One of Groves’ rivals in the ring was Carl Froch who commented on the reel saying “Good luck lads! Lucas, you’re in good hands. George knows the game at every level.” He also brought up, as usual, he knocked out Groves in front of 80,000 people at Wembley Stadium.
Rockstar Outside Of Games
Whilst this might surprise many people, it is not Rockstar Games’ first foray into sponsoring sport. For example, Rockstar title sponsored the Red Hook Criterium bike race for several years (which we attended a few times).
They also were the main sponsor of bodyboarding world championships in the early 2000’s among other things like the Signature Cycles Team. It’s always cool to see Rockstar Games sponsor outside of the gaming industry. We also can’t forget Rockstar Games made an entire game about Table Tennis.
