GTA 6 news? Not quite. However, Netflix are in talks to license a Grand Theft Auto game according to a new report by The Wall Street Journal. Whilst this will create more questions than answers, we can take a look at what we know so far.
Netflix does games?
The streaming company have been stepping up their gaming effort in the last few months. As part of their efforts to bolster their efforts in both mobile and console games, they have been hiring industry veterans. One particular hire that made waves was Joseph Staten, one of the beloved developers behind the Halo franchise. Joe said he would be the creative director on a new AAA game.
GTA game for Netflix discussed
So far Netflix have been purchasing the license of various IP like Assassin’s Creed or creating games on ones they own such as Stranger Things. According to WSJ, more licensed titles will be part of its game catalogue.
They also say they have had talks with Take-Two Interactive to “It has discussed plans to release a game within the popular action-adventure series Grand Theft Auto”. This is coming from sources familiar with Netflix’s plans.
This means they are hoping to get a GTA game on their platform. Right now we have no idea which game(s) this could be. If it is mobile only, we could finally see the GTA Trilogy remasters via Netflix and GTA+.
Why would they do this?
The GTA series is one that is one of the biggest in entertainment history. GTA V has sold nearly 200 million copies and the entire franchise has now reached 400 million in total.
Whilst GTA 6 will be Rockstar Games’ tentpole release in the coming years, they can always take a big payment from Netflix to license out the name.
This is not the first time Rockstar Games have done licensing deals. Currently, they are funding the Max Payne Remake whereas Remedy Entertainment are developing it. We also learned last month the cost Take-Two charge for GTA V to be part of Xbox Game Pass.
