In groundbreaking news today in an address to Remedy Entertainment Plc investors and long time fans of Max Payne, the original developers behind the original Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne have signed a deal with Rockstar Games to help finance development, marketing and other costs for a complete remake of the original titles. The deal was signed today, per the PR release.
Remedy notes both entity remakes are currently “in the concept development stage”, meaning the release is many years away from now and it will debut exclusively for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and PC without a last-gen debut, allowing Remedy Games to take full advantage of the new hardware without being limited in any way or form from the old consoles.
Both games will be remade on Remedy’s game proprietary Northlight engine and it will have a budget cost of “a typical Remedy AAA-game production”, as Remedy notes in their blog – the cost of their most recent game Control was around $30M, so their budget for the remakes is more likely to be around that estimate or a little lower than that.
These games will be remade from the ground up, so don’t panic it won’t be another controversial re-release like the recently occurred tragic launch of Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – both remakes are being developed by the original developers this time around there won’t be an outsourced studio involved with its development.
Rockstar’s Sam Houser, President and Founder of Rockstar Games tells investors and fans that surprisingly Remedy actually approached a pitch to remake both titles to the company, to which Rockstar accepted and signed the deal today.
We were thrilled when our long-time friends at Remedy approached us about remaking the original Max Payne games,
Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games
There are many, many years to wait until Remedy officially finalises its development of both remakes, we’re super excited to be able to cover this in the coming years ahead of its development and long pre-release phase. It’s unlikely the game will ship out before the upcoming GTA title releases, it’s possible to release shortly or long after GTAVI ships out.
We wish the best of luck to everyone at Remedy Games and we cannot wait to see what Remedy has to show!
