New GTA V details have been included in a major Xbox leak. Information on how much costs to bring it into game pass and more has been revealed.
What’s happened?
Xbox and the FTC were in a court battle over the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Court documents for the Xbox vs FTC case that should have been sealed were publicly made available this morning. One of the PDFs included various unreleased games Xbox knew were in development and they discussed the likelihood of them coming to Xbox Game Pass. The list also included GTA V, a released title.
GTA V on Game Pass price revealed
One of the games listed in this document is Grand Theft Auto V. Whilst GTA V recently returned to Game Pass after a couple of years away, Xbox looked at bringing it back soon. The document states T2/GTA V (TakeTwo/GTA V) on Game Pass had a medium chance of happening.
Microsoft also noted they would expect Take-Two to ask for around $12 to $15 million a month to be on Game Pass for approximately 30 million hours of time played in the game. This is more than the cost Microsoft seemed Take-Two would charge for an upcoming next gen day one release of Red Dead Redemption 2. We can assume it has cost Xbox around $12 million for GTA V to show up in Game Pass for the last couple of times. It is possible more was charged to get the next gen version of GTA V included this time.
A wildcard Microsoft looked at was bringing GTA V on PC to Game Pass but that has not happened. They also wondered if Take-Two would do GTA V in Game Pass for a term longer than 3-4 months as that was the rough time frame of previous outings. We do not know how long GTA V will remain in Game Pass currently. It came back in July so we could see it leave in a few weeks from now for early October.
You can see the listing in a table from Microsoft’s emails below.
One of the most engaged games on Xbox
A slide on a leaked document showed the most engaged franchises on Xbox in 2015 to 2019. Grand Theft Auto was in 4th place behind Fortnite, Call of Duty and FIFA. It had a total of 6.4 billion hours played with 6.9 million monthly average users with an average yearly play time of 233 hours.
