GTA V was the second most watched game on Twitch in 2023. The game might be over 10 years old but it has once again been hugely successful in sales and as a livestreamed game.
Revealed in a new report from StreamElements via Rainmaker.gg, Grand Theft Auto V was the second most watched game in 2023 on Twitch just like last year. This chart is done by ranking Twitch categories based on watch time hours from January 1st to December 6th 2023.
A lot of this continued success can be attributed to GTA RP streams, GTA Online updates and of course the gigantic global excitment for GTA VI and its trailer.
Maintaining second place
In 2021, GTA V was by far the most viewed game on Twitch in terms of watch time hours. However, in 2022 is dropped down a place to 2021’s runner up, Riot’s League of Legends. These two maintained their 1st and 2nd places again in 2023.
Interestingly, both games are down year-over-year in terms of hours watched. During this year, GTA V had 1.175 billion hours watched on Twitch and LoL had 1.228b. These figures are both down from 2022 and those were down from 2021.
2021 saw GTA V reach 2.1 billion hours and LoL had 1.8b. In contrast for 2022, GTA V dropped down to 1.3 billion hours watched and League came in with 1.4b. It’s a slight decrease which makes sense given the age of the games and strong competition from new games this year. Plus, all categories excluding gambling and Minecraft are down this year too.
GTA V on top for Christmas
According to stats site TwitchMetrics, GTA V is in the lead as the most watched Twitch game for December 2023 so far. As the month comes to a close and Christmas is almost upon is, the game dominates every other game on Twitch. As of December 20th, it has reached nearly 130 million viewer watch hours. This is 25 million more than second place Fortnite.
Compared to the same period last year, GTA V has racked up around 30 million more minutes watched. This can be attributed to the hype for the GTA VI trailer and Nopixel’s 4.0 update that launched in December. Plus, Rockstar Games have been giving away more than 600,000 Twitch subs since December to GTA RP viewers. This is part of a week-long imitative called GTA RP Week to give back to the community.
GTA V was also the most watched video game in the previous quarter of this year. We look forward to seeing how the game did during this quarter once the results are out in January.
