The remastered versions of the classic GTA Trilogy games have just gotten a big update. It took 3 years and 1 day after launch but Rockstar Games have issued fixes to GTA The Trilogy Definitive Edition. This patch brings a highly requested change and many other improvements which we’ll share below with screenshots along with patch notes.
The update is now live on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and all PC storefronts: Steam, the Rockstar Games Launcher and the Epic Games Store.
UPDATE November 13: Rockstar Games have released this patch on Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Whilst it took a day extra and the patch notes don’t include the last gen consoles, fans have taken to reddit to show that they have gotten the update.
In terms of download size, the Rockstar Games Launcher version has the GTA San Andreas update at 18.44GB, GTA Vice City at 8.83GB and GTA III at 4.15GB. On PS5, Vice City’s update is 1.657GB. The PS4 versions come in at around 4GB. These numbers will vary depending which storefront you got it from.
Most Requested Feature Added
Now for the main, requested addition to these highly controversial remasters. When this pack came out 3 years ago, fans complained about the lighting. When they released on mobile last year in partnership with Netflix, Rockstar Games announced a Classic Lighting mode. The studio said turning on this mode “restores the look and feel of the sky in the original games.” Lighting for the various areas e.g. Los Santos, San Andreas, Las Venturas etc are now as they were in the original.
Since these mobile ports came out in December last year, fans of these classic games have been asking Rockstar to bring over this feature to the console and PC versions. It has taken 11 months but it is finally here. In the pause menu, click options, then select the graphics tab. There, you’ll find the Classic Lighting setting with an Off or On option. By default, it is set to On.
Below is a side-by-side comparison of the mode on and off. Click on the images to view and full resolution. The in-game settings are all maxed out on PC in these images.
More Changes
Rockstar Games/Video Game Deluxe have also reintroduced the heat haze and ambient clouds high up in the sky and fixed issues with jeans. Some improvements have been made to the playable characters as well. For example, the models are more natural in their animation plus the water/swimming speed has been resolved. These were first spotted by Twitter user @MarioButoto99. Below are some screenshots from him showing improvements.
Spotted by Twitter user @BeskInfinity, you are now able to shoot shotguns, assault rifles and the flamethrower whilst running when playing GTA III and Vice City. This was previously removed. Also, street lights are now orange with a bit of flare rather than white which is accurate to the original games. Besk also noticed the running and aiming animations have seen improvement. Check out the side-by-side comparison below of this. Left is how it used to be, right is how it is now.
On top of this, Rockstar have removed a mention of Grove Street Games, the company originally behind this remastered collection. Before this update, you could see their logo in the main menu with the text “Version by”.
