PlayStation have announced that they will no longer be producing discs for video games from 2028. Sony’s PlayStation division announced the deeply unpopular change on Wednesday in a blog post. The company say that “customer preferences” along with “broader entertainment industry trends” have led to this decision. Physical game production will cease from January 2028. Sony’s seismic decision means every Rockstar Games title currently in printing (GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2, Red Dead Redemption and more) will continue to be be printed to disc for the foreseeable future and this January 2028 does not affect it. A new report has revealed several GTA 6 developers are accusing Rockstar Games of multiple things. These include pushing for crunch despite how poorly that went in previous titles such as GTA V and Red dead Redemption 2. GTA 6 developers have now formally requested Rockstar Games officially recognise them ahead of the game’s launch. This comes after hundreds of developers who currently work at Rockstar on GTA VI and those that were fired officially launched their union last month. The Guardian is reporting that the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and the newly formed Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU) are attempting to gain true unionisation by Grand Theft Auto 6’s release date, November 19th. GTA 6 pre-orders opened last Thursday and it is speculated millions, potentially tens of millions of people, have already parted ways with $70 to $100 ahead of launch. However, physical sales of the game are looking to be like a rounding error due to the lack of disc found in the box of the game. These ads seemingly confirm PlayStation have paid Rockstar an ungodly sum of money for marketing rights. The big marking push across digital and traditional media is underway following pre-orders opening last week.
