From GTA to NFT. It has been over two years since co-founder of Rockstar Games and writer of GTA V among many other games, Dan Houser, left the company. This took the Rockstar Games community by surprise but since then the next stage of Houser’s illustrious career has been quiet, until now.
Dan’s new venture
Mr Houser has joined Revolving Games as an adviser plus invested money into the company. This raising round totalled $13.2 million according to an interview Revolving Games did with GamesBeat. If you’re wondering who Revolving Games are, we have a quick rundown. Founded in 2019 as a mobile game studio, Revolving are now turning to blockchain technology for their games. The team currently are working on a strategy game set in the Battlestar Galactica universe which incorporates blockchain. There is also a second game in development that is titled Skyborne Legacy. This is said to be a RPG with social elements and is also running on a blockchain network.
According to the GamesBeat interview with Revolving Games leader Saad Zaeem, he said he met with Dan Houser “a few years ago and they started exploring ideas together. But they wound up doing different kinds of work. So Houser became an adviser (and an investor) instead.” Zaeem goes onto say “Dan is a legend of the industry”, this is true especially for fans of the games created by Rockstar. Revolving Games has seen investments reach over $25 million in the last few years and looks to raise more.
Blockchain technology has been controversial in recent times, particularly in the games industry. A large portion of the industry is currently rejecting this with only a couple of major companies such as Ubisoft and Square Enix dipping their toes in and facing severe backlash. Former co-worker of Dan Houser, Leslie Benzies’ new game had job listings mentioning blockchain technology. A developer from the studio stated the game is not being built on the blockchain.
