Red Dead Redemption 2 could be finally getting a next gen update for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S plus a Nintendo Switch 2 port according to a new report by two gaming websites, Gamereactor and Nintenduo. These two sites claim to have sources at Rockstar Games that have told them separately about the company’s plans for 2025.
Whilst we’ve heard rumours of a Nintendo Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 for some time, we now have two outlets citing different sources saying the same thing but also a next gen update is coming.
Red Dead 2 On Switch 2
Both Gamereactor and Nintenduo report Rockstar Games could put Red Dead Redemption 2 on Nintendo Switch 2 before the end of Take-Two’s current financial year. That means before March 31st 2026. Given GTA 6’s delay to next year and the Switch 2’s launch about to take place, it makes sense.
Take-Two told investors last night that they have plans to release “4 new iterations of previously-released titles” in this financial year. One of them could be a re-release of GTA 4 which was leaked by a known Rockstar Games insider this week.
Take-Two’s CEO also said that they feel “really good” about Nintendo’s upcoming console. Perhaps Red Dead 2 on Switch 2 could also be one of those unannounced re-releases.

Red Dead Redemption 2 60FPS Patch?
The same two outlets claim Rockstar are planning to release an update for Red Dead Redemption 2 that takes full advantage of the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. This would likely allow the game to run at 60FPS, with a higher resolution and improved graphical settings.
In terms of release, they are unsure if it will come alongside the Switch 2 version or later down the line. It sounds like it will be more of a patch than a new, paid version as we saw with GTA V’s gen9 version on consoles in 2022. Of course, this is still just a rumour and should be taken with a grain of salt until further notice.
Fans have been begging Rockstar Games for years now to release even just a 60FPS patch for the western masterpiece. The launch of an actual next gen update would delight the playerbase who continue to explore the wild west. Red Dead Online players have remained vocal with their #SaveRedDeadOnline movement.

The game has just surpassed 74 million copies sold as of May 15th. Plus, the game has been the most downloaded PS4 game for the past 5 months in a row. Given the game continues to sell over a million copies every month, a next gen update just makes a ton of sense.
