Red Dead Redemption 2 players have relaunched the Save Red Dead Online campaign years after it went viral. We’re closing in on 4 years since Rockstar Games last delivered meaningful content updates for the game and yet it continues to sell well and have an active community.
We first reported on the #SaveRedDeadOnline campaign back in 2022 when it had almost been a year since Rockstar last released content updates. In 2021, it was reported development had been put on hold due to the next-gen version of GTA V and GTA Trilogy remasters and of course GTA 6.
A Few Summers Ago
During the summer of 2022, the #SaveRedDeadOnline campaign went viral and trended across social media. Despite gaining quite a lot of coverage, Rockstar did not changed its path. However, they were forced into a response. The company confirmed development would be halted as it was all hands on deck for GTA 6.
No new content updates aside from the Event Months has come out since. Sure, the game has been updated several times with support for newer FSR versions and HDR standards plus bug fixes but that’s it. Not even a 60FPS mode for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.
What’s Happening Now

A new petition has been started to gain Rockstar’s attention. In the few days it has been live, it has gained 2,500 signatures. In harsh reality is it would have to take millions for Rockstar to even consider anything in the short term. Petitions usually don’t do anything, especially when it comes to games. You can sign the petition here if you wish to do so.
Despite this sad reality, the once GTA VI comes out this Fall, there might be time for developers to revisit this popular title. Based on what we see our Red Dead community ask for, a 60FPS patch for current gen consoles is the most requested and seems feasible. It would be fantastic to see Rockstar go back and update their beloved game in 2026.
Unfortunately for those that love the world of Red Dead Online, Rockstar will not deviate from their current course. GTA 6 is in its final stages of production ahead of its Fall 2025 release. All focus and resources are on this game as it is set to be the largest launch in entertainment history.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Just Keeps Winning

This is despite Red Dead Redemption 2 regularly being the most downloaded PS4 game such as last month. Or the concurrent player count record on Steam being broken a few times in the past couple of years including last month. The game had almost 100,000 people playing at the same time, double that on launch day. Plus, the game has now sold over 70 million copies worldwide making it the 7th best selling game of all time and close to being in 6th position. The game sold 3 million copies in the last 3 months.
That said, most people buy Red Dead Redemption 2 for the story and it is hard to tell how many play Red Dead Online. Given the lack of investment from Rockstar, the overwhelming majority play the incredible single-player game and don’t spend money on microtransactions in Red Dead Online. To major corporations like Take-Two and Rockstar, money is what comes first.
To make matters worse, it appears that RedM is essentially done for. A wild and long document exposing the drama within the FiveM/RedM team who were bought by Rockstar Games revealed it might be over in terms of development for the modified version of Red Dead Online. Learn more here.
