Red Dead Redemption 2 might be releasing on the Nintendo Switch 2 in just a few months. That’s according to various sources in the past day or so. Rockstar Games released the first Red Dead Redemption on Nintendo Switch back in August 2023 and it seems like they’re gearing up to put out a new version of the following game.
The past couple of weeks have been rife with various leaks and rumours showing off the new Nintendo console, accessories for it and even features. In terms of actual games for it though it has taken until the past day for some software rumours to arrive.
The Rumours So Far
The first murmurings of Red Dead 2 on Switch 2 came from product pages that were made by French retailer FNAC. A Reddit user found several webpages pre-made for the Nintendo Switch 2 and games. The game pages even included which publisher they are from. Two of the pages are for Take-Two Interactive games; Rockstar’s parent company. Whilst it could be any Take-Two title, a Twitter user claims the EAN for one of them is Red Dead Redemption 2.
Furthermore, a leaker who correctly gave information about the PS5 Pro announcement and implied Nintendo were announcing Switch hardware on October 9th (it was actually Alarmo), added to the matter. They claimed Red Dead Redemption 2 is indeed coming to Switch 2. This leaker also specifically claims the console will be revealed next week on January 17th and Red Dead 2 is a launch title with the release date of March 3rd.
Of course, these are just rumours and there is nothing definitive to say Rockstar’s epic western will come to Nintendo’s new console. We won’t have to wait long to find out if these leakers and users were incorrect.
Rockstar Tried This Before
Rockstar releasing Red Dead 2 on Switch 2 is not much of a surprise. They have released games such as Red Dead 1, L.A. Noire and the GTA Trilogy on the hybrid console. Plus, Rockstar insider Tez2 said that in 2019 the company had some plans to bring Red Dead 2 onto Switch and there is even the controller in the files of the PC version. On top of that, Red Dead Redemption 2 was age rated in Brazil for the Nintendo Switch in September 2023.
Given Red Dead Redemption only runs at 30FPS on Nintendo Switch, it seems like the prequel game was not fit to run on the device. Now the new console has more capable hardware (rumoured to be around the power of a PS4) it would be able to.
As of November 2024, Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 67 million copies world wide. It is one of the best selling games of all time and continues to sell around 1 million units every 3 months despite releasing in 2018.
Having this game on a new platform with what should have a large install base fairly quickly seems like a smart move. There is a fair chance Red Dead 2 runs at 60FPS before Xbox Series X|S and PS5…
