Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 have continued their great start in 2023 in terms of sales and downloads. New reports with verified data shows these two titles from Rockstar Games just keep on going despite their age and brand new blockbuster releases.
Sony reveals GTA V is not slowing down
PlayStation released their monthly game charts for PS5, PS4, PSVR and F2P games on Friday. After taking the crown in both USA/Canada and Europe charts last month, GTA 5 has dropped a place or two. It ended February in 3rd and 2nd place due to Hogwarts Legacy releasing in the month.
An interesting turn of events is on the PS4 chart. For January it was in 4th and 5th places but in February it has moved down to 7th and 6th position. The PS4 positions are likely slipping due to far more PS5 stock being made available in the last month or so. Plenty of players who have upgraded their consoles will want to take advantage of the powerful hardware and play the next gen version of GTA V and GTA Online.
Another interesting point to come out of these charts is that Red Dead Redemption 2 has surpassed GTA V in both the US/Canada and European charts. In the previous monthly charts, the game was in 3rd and 6th place. February saw it take 4th and 5th position. Red Dead 2 can only be counted in the PS4 chart as there is only a PS4 version.
Europe Chart Placements
The European charts report for games sales during February 2023 by GSD via gamesindustry.biz have been released. This data includes all digital and physical copies sold in the continent and GTA 5 was in 3rd position. Behind it in 6th place was Red Dead Redemption 2. If we compare it to January, GTA V dropped a place from 2nd place and RDR2 took a hit down from 3rd position. This is unsurprising given the release of Hogwarts Legacy.
UK Chart Placements
The report for UK digital and physical games sales for February 2023 were released on Monday by GSD via gamesindustry.biz. The report tells a different story to the previous month due to the success of Hogwarts Legacy and the PS5 being widely available in the region. In January, just over 2 million games were sold whereas that number has climbed to 2.8m for February 2023. This is also up 11% from February 2022.
As for specifics on Rockstar titles, GTA V was the fourth best selling game in the UK for February 2023 behind Hogwarts Legacy, FIFA 23 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This is down two places from last month but up a place from February last year. Red Dead Redemption 2 has shown no signs of dropping off the cliff either. It was the 6th best selling game last month; down from 4th place in the previous month. It is a stark contrast to 2022 though as it was only 9th place in the same timeframe last year.
Grand Theft Auto Online as a standalone game is also included in the charts. Despite being only available digitally on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles it comes in 12th place down from 8th position in February. It can’t be compared to February 2022 as it released in March 2022. We’ll see how it compares when March’s data is released next month.
