Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2 have had their UK sales figures released in a new report by ERA via gamesindustry.biz. The monthly charts for February 2023 have also been revealed showing a small drop partially due to Hogwarts Legacy. We will share the monthly charts data later in the article after the 2022 yearly breakdown.
Full 2022 sales breakdown
This data not only includes how many copies were sold but also the breakdown for both physical and digital sales. Firstly, GTA 5 was the 5th best selling game in all of 2022. The games above it were all new major releases: FIFA 23, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Elden Ring and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.
GTA V sold a total of 816,081 copies in 2022 just 1218 less than 4th place and almost 50,000 less than Elden Ring. Considering this is GTA V’s 9th year on sale that is mightily impressive. This is down from 3rd place and 967,242 copies sold in 2021.
It sold far more physical copies too which is a surprise to us. The reason being the next gen version of GTA V released digitally in March 2022 then a month later the disc copies came out. On top of that PC copies are for the most part sold digitally via storefronts like Steam and yet disc copies overall with all platforms dwarfs digital. To put it in perspective 82.5% of copies sold were physical. A notable omission from this list is the standalone version of GTA Online. It is digital only which will be the reason why it can’t compete with these other games that mostly sell more physically.
Red Dead Redemption 2’s rise in sales towards the end of 2022 put it up in 13th place despite lots of new releases. It was down from 10th place in 2021 however. It sold a total of 354,905 copies in 2022, down from 395,669 in 2021 and that’s without any new major content updates. Much like GTA V, the digital sales were only a fraction of the copies sold as 87.6% were physical.
UK Chart Placements for February
The report for UK digital and physical games sales for February 2023 were released on Monday by GSD via gamesindustry.biz. The report tells a different story to the previous month due to the success of Hogwarts Legacy and the PS5 being widely available in the region. In January, just over 2 million games were sold whereas that number has climbed to 2.8m for February 2023. This is also up 11% from February 2022.
As for specifics on Rockstar titles, GTA V was the fourth best selling game in the UK for February 2023 behind Hogwarts Legacy, FIFA 23 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. This is down two places from last month but up a place from February last year. Red Dead Redemption 2 has shown no signs of dropping off the cliff either. It was the 6th best selling game last month; down from 4th place in the previous month. It is a stark contrast to 2022 though as it was only 9th place in the same timeframe last year.
Grand Theft Auto Online as a standalone game is also included in the charts. Despite being only available digitally on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles it comes in 12th place down from 8th position in February. It can’t be compared to February 2022 as it released in March 2022. We’ll see how it compares when March’s data is released next month.
