GTA Online Has Become Less Toxic Thanks To AI Says Rockstar

A new study has revealed that AI has significantly aided Rockstar Games in combating toxicity in GTA Online. ToxMod creator Modulate have provided some numbers and deep insights into what goes on in GTA Online. This is a nice peek behind the curtain.

What is ToxMod?

Before we dive into the report, here’s a bit of background about Modulate and their ToxMod system.

Rockstar Games partnered with Modulate back in 2023 to begin moderation in voice chat. It wasn’t fully implemented across all versions of GTA Online until the very end of that year as part of The Chop Shop update. Rockstar’s aim was to improve player experience and engagement.

The AI-powered tool is able to quickly analyse voice chat used in GTA Online sessions. Rockstar then can act upon the voice chat usage and AI assisted moderation. The goal for this was to ban offenders and make Los Santos a more welcoming place for gamers. You can learn more about ToxMod here.

Rockstar’s decision to integrate ToxMod into the game caused a bit of controversy among players. The fanbase argued that with the game being age rated 18+, they should be allowed to say whatever they like. A vocal minority of the players threatened to stop playing GTA Online all together if ToxMod is used by Rockstar. Well, based on what we know about the game’s financials in the past year or so, players supposedly quitting over this hasn’t had any impact on the game’s profits.

Has GTA Online Become Less Toxic?

Let’s now dive into the new report published by Modulate and Rockstar Games.

The report states that during 2025, playercounts for GTA Online “grew substantially” and yet voice chat toxicity reduced thanks to the newly implemented system. It is said that the average daily violations decreased by around 35% throughout the year. In terms of accuracy, ToxMod had 98% rating meaning that very few instances were falsely picked up by the AI.

According to Modulate, 3-5% of players violate community guidelines on similar games prior to ToxMod integration. When the system was first tested in GTA Online back in 2023, they found that 3.2% of players were violating the community guidelines laid out by Rockstar so this was in line with those other titles. However, since ToxMod has been working effectively, that number has now fallen to 0.49% for weekly users as of the end of 2025.

According to the data, voice chat abuse roughly increases the chance of “rage quitting” from GTA Online by up to 50%. This is due to the abuse causing anger. Players typically are caused less anger from failing parts of the game such as heists or sell missions and even repeated deaths than hearing abuse via voice chat. Removing abusive players via ToxMod has led to a more welcoming space across Southern San Andreas.

“Voice chat abuse appears to be a substantially stronger driver of player anger than challenging gameplay. Players exposed to abusive communication in the previous five minutes show up to 50% higher anger scores, while mission failures and repeated deaths show much weaker effects. High anger is in turn associated with up to a 50% higher probability of logging off within fifteen minutes, identifying a measurable link between abusive voice chat and session abandonment.”

That said, players argue almost no one uses voice chat in GTA Online so such a report is not very informative. Voice chat is off by default and text chat is still not active in GTA V Enhanced on PC. The community and Rockstar will continue to butt heads As they have done for an extremely long time and it doesn’t looks like a middle ground on the situation will occur.

Whatever. I have sent video, photos and logs to Rockstar when reporting toxic players violating the TOS and all-out wrecking the experience for other players and Rockstar hasn’t done anything to the reported accounts. They don’t care that much.
