One of the most asked questions in the world is what is the GTA 6 release date? Fans have been speculating for years as Rockstar Games remains silent. A competing game has just changed release dates fuelling speculation of what week or day GTA 6 will finally launch on.
So far, all we know is that it is coming out in Fall 2025 and that Rockstar’s parent company will not release their other two games this year near it. Take-Two Interactive made it clear last year that they would not “stack up huge releases unnecessarily” in regards to GTA VI, Borderlands 4 and Mafia: The Old Country.
Setting The Stage
Take-Two previously announced Mafia: The Old Country would release in 2025 but no date. It was recently leaked on the game’s Steam store page to have a August 8th date at least at some point. Meanwhile Borderlands 4 was confirmed to drop on September 23rd a few months ago.
Pushing Forward
This has all changed in the last few days. Gearbox and Take-Two announced Borderlands 4’s release date was moving and it was not a delay. It is actually being moved up to September 12th. Of course, this was taken by most people as a sign GTA VI is coming out late September or October with a final date being locked in recently. A gameplay showcase for Mafia is taking place on May 8th which will likely give us the release date.
However, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford took to Twitter to debunk such claims. He said “Borderlands 4 shipping early is 100% the result of confidence in the game and development trajectory backed by actual tasks and bug find/fix rates. Our decision is literally 0% about any other product’s actual or theoretical launch date.”
Understanding The Reasons Why
Given Take-Two know when their games will release, they can strategically place their games far enough apart and give Borderlands 4 space away from GTA VI. However, that is not the entire story. Take-Two typically release their annual iteration of NBA 2K in the first week of September. That makes Borderlands 4 very close to it. Bungie’s Marathon has since been confirmed to be coming out on September 23rd. Some people are going to win, many are going to lose this battle in the market.
Many fans and those in the industry don’t believe Pitchford. Business journalist Chris Dring said on Bluesky “If this is true, then it’s a bit odd. They’ve gone out with a date. It’s on calendars, market materials, social assets… Put ‘Borderlands 4 release date’ into Google and it still says Sep 23. There’s got to be a good commercial reason to shift a date.”
