GTA V was refused an age rating classification earlier this month. This caused a lot of confusion among gamers in Indonesia where a new system for age ratings has been implemented. The confusion specifically took place on valves steam PC platform. Grand Theft Auto V is extremely popular there and an 18 rating was not even found just straight up refuse to be classified. Thankfully, there is a good ending to this story.
A “Refused Classification” (RC) rating led to games such as GTA V being unable to be bought by consumers in Indonesia. As noted by Niko Partners, Steam states that “Steam will no longer be able to display games to customers in Indonesia if the game is missing a valid age rating.”
It was expected that games such as GTA V which have a rating provided by the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) would get the same rating with the IGRS however that was not the case.
Niko Partners reported on the matter revealing gamers in the region had also discovered 18 rated games such as Call of Duty were given a 3+ rating. This is typically reserved for games with no action. The Indonesia Game Rating System (IGRS) underwent and overhaul earlier this year and is led by the country’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs department. The aim is for a “more hands-on approach towards online content that may be inappropriate or harmful for children.”
Resolution
Given the mass confusion, the government department responsible for these ratings released a statement confirming those seen on Steam were not the official IGRS results. Then on April 6th, Valve removed the age ratings from Steam.
Thankfully this was cleared up a few days later. Valve took to a page on Steam stating that it was a technical bug and miscommunication between the two parties that led to the incorrect ratings on their platform. This matter has now been resolved and processes for the IGRS will improve over time.
