Ex-Rockstar Dev Reveals What It’s Like To Work With Sam And Dan Houser

A Rockstar Games developer who worked on some of their biggest games has revealed what it’s like to work with Sam and Dan Houser and how they are so important to the games they make.

John Ricchio is a producer who worked at Rockstar Games’ San Diego office for several years. He helped develop titles such as GTA V, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3. Earlier this month, the developer sat down and spoke with KIWI TALKZ, a YouTube channel that interviews game developers about their experience in the industry.

The interview covered a wide range of topics from what it was like to work at Rockstar Games during the production of games like GTA V and Red Dead to his thoughts on GTA 6 and more. Despite having an impressive portfolio working on some of the greatest games ever, Ricchio has been unemployed for some time now due to the poor state the gaming finds itself in.

Whilst many Rockstar Games staff have never met or even seen Sam or Dan Houser, Ricchio actually has spent time with the president of Rockstar Games and the former creative lead. Here’s what he said when he was asked if he had met the brothers.

“Oh yeah! I’ve been to dinner with those guys. They’re brilliant, brilliant humans. They’re really smart and they pull really cool and smart people together. I think they are a big reason, I think they’re simultaneously a big reason why it’s tough to work there and why their stuff is so cool.

I think there are very few leaders at those levels that care as much about the games as then they do. I think they want the games to be cool. The reality is they have to work through people and I think that can cause some frustration on both sides. But they care deeply about it.

There’s not a game that goes out that Sam has not played. There is nothing that you’re going to play that has an R-Star on it that has not gone through that kind of, you know, that that level of scrutiny from the highest levels.”

Be sure to watch the full interview with the producer here as it is full of more Rockstar Games and development stories.

KIWI TALKZ has also interviewed other Rockstar Games developers prior to this one. This includes an environment artist who worked on GTA 6 discussed how the game changes over time and what it was like to work at Rockstar during GTA 6. Check it out here. More recently, an audio designer shared his thoughts on GTA VI and how it will evolve compared to past titles.

Plus, we reported on how another developer revealed the bad parts of Rockstar’s culture back in the day. On top of that, a different developer discussed a canned combat overhaul for GTA V. You can read all about it here.
