GTA Online is getting a big update this summer and in this article we’ll be taking a look at everything we know about it so far. From a possible release date to content and more, the routine large content drop for GTA Online is coming despite GTA 6 coming out next year. As more details come out about the update, we’ll update this article.
First details confirmed
Like most summers, Rockstar Games are releasing a sizeable DLC for GTA Online in the upcoming season. It was a surprise Rockstar announced it so early though; back at the start of April. Plus, it was part of a Newswire post talking about new GTA+ perks. The wording used by the company to announce the update was “summer’s big GTA Online update.”
Whilst Rockstar Games have used “big” to describe updates in the past, it is not used for every single one. This left GTA Online fans wondering and dreaming of what could be on the way to the game soon.
The reason why this important announcement was put in this blog post was because they teased GTA+ members would be getting a brand new super car for free that is part of the summer update content. Again, fans were left to speculate what it could be based on but they did not have to wait long…
First screenshot
In another surprising move in May, Rockstar revealed the identity of the upcoming car part of the summer update along with a screenshot. Called the Överflöd Pipistrello, it will be part of the super car class and is based on the real world Estrema Fulminea. The Fulminea is an all-electric 2,000bhp powerhouse. It will be interesting to see how it plays in GTA Online.
As noted previously, this car will be free for GTA+ members when a new month starts right after the release of the car. It’s price for non-members is currently unknown but we don’t expect it to be cheap.
Below is the first screenshot of the Pipistrello from Överflöd. Some GTA community members have also been wondering whereabouts this screenshot was taken. Some have speculated if this is a new location. It is also possible this is purely made up for the screenshot or is heavily edited.
Leaked content
Reputable Rockstar insider Tez2 has told fans on the GTA forums to “expect” Drift and Drag Races to be added to the creator mode in the summer update. This will allow fans to create their own Drag and Drift series races. Drift Races were added to GTA Online as part of The Chop Shop update back in December. Meanwhile Drag Races came in January as part of the drip-feed for that update.
Fans have been quite happy with their introduction but would like to see more races from Rockstar. Tez shared his expectation of them in creator mode because fans will make new ones if Rockstar won’t.
When will it be released?
At this moment in time, we have nothing concrete when the update will come out but based on the earlier than usual announcements, there is a feeling it could release in June just like last year. As noted by Tez2, we can use GTA+ as a guide for when an update will release. GTA+ last 4 weeks and during the halfway stage at 2 weeks to go, Rockstar send an in-game reminder for people to sign up.
Rockstar have extended GTA+ months past the 4 weeks when an update is coming. For example, last year a reminder was not given on May 25th or June 1st which gave us wind of an extension. The reminder came through a week later on June 8th and this also was a week after the update was announced in full. In theory, if Rockstar do not send out a GTA+ reminder on Thursday May 23rd then we could see an extension of GTA+ leading to a first half of June update release.
If there is no extension then expect the update to come out later in the summer, during July or August. Those months aren’t out of the realm of possibility given summer updates have launched in those months before.
UPDATE: Rockstar did not send out an in-game reminder on May 23rd.
MAY 30TH UPDATE:
The GTA+ reminder has now been added to GTA Online. Tez says “No sign of an early June DLC release anymore.” The late reminder but no extension is a little unusual.
