Red Dead Redemption 2 wins award 5 years after it released

Red Dead Redemption 2 has just won an award over 5 years after it came out. The western masterpiece by Rockstar Games is continuing to sell well and win both hearts and awards. The is widely considered one of the greatest games of all time. It recently passed 57 million copies sold averaging 1-2 million a month last year.

    Winner of a Steam Award

At the end of 2023, PC platform Steam gave all users the ability to nominate games for a variety of categories. Red Dead players turned up in numbers and nominated RDR2 for the “Labor of Love” award. The other fan-voted finalists were Dota 2, Deep Rock Galactic, Rust, and Apex Legends.

This isn’t the first time Red Dead Redemption 2 has been nominated for this exact award. It was also voted by fans for this same category in the previous year. It did win Outstanding Story-Rich Game and the Game of the Year in 2020 following its release on PC in late 2019.

Steam announced the winners of each category on Tuesday and Red Dead Redemption 2 won the Labor of Love award. This has been met with quite a negative reaction on social media from Red Dead fans.

Fans don’t agree with its victory

Many people would assume the players would be happy for this but they are not. Red Dead Online nor the main game have received any meaningful content updates for 2 years now.

The description Steam for the award is: “This game has been out for a while. The team is well past the debut of their creative baby, but being the good parents they are, these devs continue to nurture and support their creation. This game, to this day, is still getting new content after all these years.”

Well, that does not line up with what has happened to Red Dead Redemption 2. There has been no content updates outside of event months despite calls for DLCs by fans.

Some fans don’t realise other fans voted it for it whilst others are annoyed at the fans who voted for it as it gives Rockstar an undeserved accolade. Based on Red Dead Redemption 2 and other titles winning the awards, many people have speculated those voting are simply picking a game they like rather than if it meets the criteria.

For example, a lot of Steam Deck owners are in disagreement with Hogwart’s Legacy winning the Best Game on the handheld. Same goes for others who feel Starfield should not have won the Most Innovative Gameplay award.

Steam Deck and Steam numbers still fly

Speaking of Steam Deck, Red Dead Redemption 2 was once again one of the most played titles on the device last month. This is determined by hours played and each month RDR2 is found in this list.

As a game in general on Steam, it has gained a lot of traction in the last 12 months or so. It ended 2021 and started 2022 off exceptionally well. The game hit a new peak player count recently too.
