The Max Payne Remake has just received a new development update from Remedy Entertainment. The company have revealed it is moving on from the stage we last heard it was in and what’s next for it. This comes hot off the heels of the raving reviews of Alan Wake 2.
What’s been happening
It has been 18 months since Remedy and Rockstar Games announced a next-gen remake of Max Payne 1 and 2. Whilst it had been very quiet for the first year, we’ve started to see the project pick up pace.
Just last month, Sam Lake said the remakes are “a significant undertaking in the sense that even if they are old games, just thinking about bringing them up to modern standards and combining them into one, you can see that it’s a big, big project.”
Back in April, Remedy stated the remakes were “progressing well” and that it was no longer in the concept stage and had moved into the proof-of-concept stage. On top of that, it had -a “small team focused on the core of any successful product, the gameplay.” They ended their statement by saying “We expect the project to keep advancing well and with that, the team size will expand gradually towards year-end.”
The new phase of development has begun
As part of their quarterly report to investors, the company have shared a small but important progress step. CEO Tero Virtala had this to say about the Max Payne 1&2 remake:
Max Payne 1&2 remake progressed into the production readiness stage. We have gained clarity on the style and scope of the game, and we have an exceptionally well-organized team working on it. With these accomplishments, we are excited about the project and its future success.

Fans will be very pleased to hear the remakes have now come out of conceptual stages and are preparing for full game production. Remedy are “excited” and have worked out how large of a project this will be and have assembled a team to get this game up and running. This proof-of-concept stage has taken about 6 months to complete.
Based on Remedy’s self published game development process, we can see that this stage will take around 3-6 months. This is the same length of time as the previous stage. Also, the team size will have been increased from around 30-50 to 50-70. We could see another update on the Max Payne 1&2 remake in 3 months time.
When to expect the remakes to release?
The next stage is called “full production” and that can take around 2 to 2 and a half years depending on the polish needed and scale of the game. This means the Max Payne Remake could still be close to 3 years away at worst. Despite this, the transparency from Remedy is appreciated by fans.
