Musician, actor and huge Red Dead Redemption fan Jack Black cannot believe Rockstar Games’ IP has become a Hollywood blockbuster.
Black who voiced Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, has most recently lent his talents to Claptrap in the Borderlands film. It comes out in August this year and the actor/artist went on the Inside Total Film podcast to discuss the project. The episode has not aired yet but the magazine shared snippets from the interview on their website.
When asked what video games he’d like to see adapted into a film, Black responds by saying he “can’t believe” a GTA or Red Dead film has been started on. He puts emphasis Red Dead in particular. There has been a lot of talk from the communities of those games about a possible film or show. You can read Jack Black’s full quote below and the interview article here.
I can’t believe they haven’t already started making a movie of any of the Rockstar Games – Grand Theft Auto, but especially Red Dead Redemption. Those things are already like movies, you know? I guess that’s the thing. Some video games are already halfway there to telling those kind of stories, and there are some movies that are like video games.
I think we’re moving in that way where there’s going to be more combinations of video games and movies, and it’s exciting. It’s like the beginning of a new era.

Back in 2022, an early Rockstar Games employee revealed how Hollywood had cast Eminem in the lead role of a Grand Theft Auto film. It was set to be directed by Tony Scott (Top Gun) but Rockstar’s Sam Houser put a stop to it saying he was not interested. You can learn more about the GTA movie that never came to fruition here.

As part of Tenacious-D, Mr Black released a song last year called called Video Games. He’s been outspoken about his love for Rockstar’s epic western and naturally incorporated it into the song’s lyrics and accompanying video. You can learn more about it here.
“Red Dead Redemption 2 that is not a game. It is an incredible journey through old American history. Fighting for your life and fighting for your family. Trying to live your days with honor and integrity. That’s not a game, that’s an adult thing.”
