The GTA V source code has leaked and it contains files from GTA VI and more. Due to this, a lot of misinformation has begun spreading about what it could mean for GTA online, GTA 6, Bully 2 and other titles.
Late on Christmas Eve, the GTA V source code was made available to download. This has led to it surfacing on social media. It was rumoured to be released on Christmas.
Some people have been saying that it was leaked on an Xbox 360 modding discord server. The individual is allegedly one that has been sued by Rockstar a few times in the past.
How it got leaked
In September 2022, Rockstar Games were hacked by a teenager. He released 90 gameplay videos of GTA 6 and threatened to release its source code as well as GTA V’s.
The source code for the game set San Andreas was sold and given to some on the dark web over a year ago. The teenager who hacked Rockstar Games and sold this code was sentenced this month to an indefinite hospital order for fraud, blackmail and more. The hack cost Rockstar Games $5 million in damages.
Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive were aware this source code has been out there in the deep, dark corners of the internet. Even though this being a bit more accessible to people is a blow to Rockstar and Take-Two, it is not as big of an issue as many on social media are exclaiming. We’ll explain more later in the article.
What has been found so far
Within the files, never before seen images of the RAGE engine, which Rockstar uses for its games, were found. The images give us an unprecedented look behind the scenes of various Rockstar Games titles. Early images and assets for GTA V, Red Dead Redemption and even the cancelled Agent game can be seen.
There are also internal emails from Rockstar Games employees talking about development on games plus release notes for RAGE engine updates. There are also a bucket load of cancelled GTA V DLC references.
Some scripts relating to GTA VI have been spotted in the leak. They include text strings referencing things from GTA VI. At this time, there’s no reason to believe this will be detrimental to Rockstar for GTA VI.
We won’t be posting any content from this leak due to it being stolen property of Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive. They are in their right to issue copyright takedown notices to anyone who shares this stolen material.
Will this ruin GTA Online with hacks?
Many people have been wondering and speculating what this means for GTA V and GTA Online. There has also been a significant amount of fear-mongering as well.
When this leaked back in September it already opened the door to hackers. Rockstar have been aware of this for over a year so it’s not a surprise them. It’s been out for over a year now and so far we’ve not seen any major damage occur in GTA Online.
Yes, it will be more widespread in terms of availability but the people that want to do damage will have already likely had access to it. Any issues are also limited to the PC version as the current gen consoles are well protected against malicious hacks.
It will also give people who have knowledge of how games work but no intention of doing damage in the form of hacks to understand better how the game works from Rockstar’s point of view.
