An executive at PlayStation says GTA 6’s obvious success will help the rest of the industry in a few ways. Head of PlayStation Creators at Sony Interactive Entertainment Greg Rice has chimed on on how he thinks GTA VI will alter the industry and the thoughts from other devs he’s heard. It’s a mixed bag of optimism. The good could be great whilst the bad could be deadly.
Speaking with GamesRadar, Rice said GTA 6 “is going to be the best, awesome, giant game for the year, for sure. It will 100% gangbusters and sell millions of copies. Continuing, Rice reveals “I think the industry is matured enough that there’s space for that and for other things as well. It’s gonna be a combination of ‘there will be games that will be successful around GTA time because they’re totally different,’ but it’ll also bring a lot more people back into the ecosystem.”
Whilst we know the game will be huge, he explains not everyone is feeling so positive. “I hear a lot of the opposite of devs, worried about it sucking all the space out. ‘I don’t want to launch during GTA week or even month, because that’s all anyone’s gonna be playing.'” And that is also what we’ve heard a few times before.
The truth is, this console generation has stalled out. The growth is simply not there. Not to mention some people are holding off buying a new console until GTA VI comes out later this year. It’s no secret a lot of people only play GTA or at least it is their main game.

Rice knows this but did mention “it’ll be the opportunity to get in on the new console generation and see what else is out there. So it’s definitely gonna be a big economic boost for the games industry, and will be a multiple billion dollar title, but I don’t think that it’s at competition with indie games.”
There’s also an argument made by some for the PS5 Pro. Given its steep cost and to some “lack of games”, they’re waiting to invest in a PS5 Pro until GTA VI comes out. Hopefully Rockstar‘s new title does not steal all of the oxygen out of the room and lets other games find a larger audience. Though there is certainly a risk that GTA VI and the new Online component takes out far too many games in its path of record breaking success.

Speaking of consoles, one of the top executives at Xbox spoke on GTA VI doing well too but also how many other titles will be moving out of its way. We’ve already seen a few games pushed back potentially due to GTA VI’s impending release.
Meanwhile Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick explained how he is not worried about the Xbox Series S being an issue for GTA VI. Whilst the Series S has proven to be an issue for some developers who have had to spend a lot more time optimising, Rockstar will do their best and we should not be worried.
