GTA 6 is shaping up to cost the United States’ economy more than $1 billion on launch day according to a new report.
With any popular video game, there’s always a joke (some some actual action) that fans will lie about being ill to take the day off for release day. Some even use PTO to give themselves a day or few to enjoy their new blockbuster.
Grand Theft Auto VI has already had people booking their time off since the previous release date. It is the most anticipated game of all time. People do not want to miss it. Lots of people have taken to social media and shared their launch day plans. We previously looked at data which indicates the game is on track to sell around 50 million copies at launch and make around $4.5b.
As reported by El Output, the substantial amount of people taking the day off and calling in sick is going to have an actual impact on the USA’s economy. José Montalvo, Professor of Economics at Pompeu Fabra University has conducted a study that points towards GTA VI’s release day alone could cause a one billion dollars due to absenteeism.
There is an expectation that thousands of Americans, more predominantly young men between 18 and 30 years old, will miss work or classes on Thursday, November 19th. The demographics point towards the technology sector being the most affected. The drop in labor productivity is estimated to be 2%. This follows past reports that claimed up to 6% of 18 and 35 years old in major cities such as LA and NYC took GTA V’s release day off.
If GTA VI costs the US that much money, the game will make much more than that for Take-Two and its shareholders. The game also is being led by a British-based office which also brings in millions for the UK economy.
