Netflix have revealed just how successful the exclusivity for the GTA 6 Extended Look has been for them.
Last week the streaming service got a 6 hour exclusivity window to showcase 27 minutes of Grand Theft Auto VI footage. The demand was so high that Netflix crashed for a minute or so. We reported on how the platform saw a rise of 35% in users. It was also confirmed that Rockstar were the ones that approached the company with the concept.
Netflix has now published their weekly charts data for last week. The video was the most watched “English film” with 31.1 million views. Globally, it hit No. 1 in 87 of the 93 countries that Netflix tracks data for. This data is from the period of August 24th-30th.
For comparison, The YouTube version which launched a few hours later has achieved 17 million views. It’s pretty interesting to see just how more popular the Netflix version was despite requiring a paywall.

There’s also a big difference than how views are counted. As of last week YouTube began counting views from the moment a video is played. Meanwhile Netflix has a far higher criteria for what counts as a view. They count a view as one full-runtime equivalent of watch time. The total hours viewed for a title is divided by its runtime. For example, one household watching the 27-minute video twice looks the same in Netflix’s math as two households each watching it once.
The competition for most watched wasn’t even close. In second place was The Whisper Man achieving 23.2 million views. That’s almost 8 million less. The GTA VI Extended Look only released on August 27th. It is worth noting that The Whisper Man did launch a day later.
