GTA 6 could be delayed to 2026 if sources included in a report are to be believed. Ever since the game’s reveal in December, the 2025 release window has disappointed some fans due to the fact we’re now over 11 years from GTA V. There has been quite a bit of optimism though that the game could come out in around 12 months but that dream by Rockstar might slip away.
Recently, Bloomberg reported on how Rockstar Games were making employees come back into the office full time for the remainder of GTA VI’s development. This is due to the company being worried productivity dropping and potential leaks. If this is to be believed, Rockstar want to hit their internal time frame. In terms of credibility, Bloomberg have reported on GTA VI several times and given us accurate information on the game.
Development on GTA 6 has started “falling behind”… leadership at Rockstar are nervous.
Kotaku’s report
Rockstar is aiming for early 2025 but a 2026 seems possible
Now a new report from Kotaku has heard from sources close to Rockstar Games a delay to 2026 could happen. The outlet start off with something fans would like to hear; at this moment in time, Rockstar have their sights set on releasing GTA VI in “early 2025”, specifically in Spring.
However, there is a cloud hanging over this party. Sources have told Kotaku that “it’s becoming more and more likely” the game will be moved into late 2025. If development does not stay on track, “it could even slip into 2026” according to the anonymous sources.
UPDATE: 26th March
Kotaku have since updated their article following more information sent to them by additional sources. These people tell the website that early 2025 is no longer the target.
2026 is an “emergency option”
Fans will be disappointed to hear move to 2026 is becoming a realistic possibility though. Rockstar have been cited to be “seeking perfection” with this game and anything less is not what they want to put out.
The same people familiar with the current GTA 6 situation went on to tell Kotaku actual development on GTA VI has begun to fall behind. On top of that, some within the higher ranks of Rockstar Games have become “nervous and worried” about the title releasing in 2026 instead.
When you look at what Bloomberg reported and now this, it is easy to see they would rather get it out in 2025 and avoid fan disappointment and investor wariness. GTA fans would rather take the hit of a delay if the game comes out polished rather than a broken mess. We’ve seen far to many games recently pushed out of the door too early. The developers should be given the time they need.
We also hope that the developers at Rockstar Games are not made to crunch and are taken good care of. Games are made by people. With GTA VI, there are thousands of talented individuals coming together to deliver the most anticipated game of all time.
There has been a lot of fake rumours spread around in the past few days about Grand Theft Auto VI. Be it the second trailer release date or how big the download size will be. These rumours are completely baseless. Kotaku even have sources acknowledging there is no word when Trailer 2 will release.
The difference between these likely made up rumours and what is coming from Kotaku is they have a track record when it comes to reporting on Rockstar Games. The same can be said about Bloomberg.
As always, this is still just a rumour for now. As for real leaks, here’s a fun story about how a Vice President at Rockstar Games phoned up someone who reported a real leak on GTA VI.
