The earliest of GTA 6 leaks was one some fans once deemed fake. However, it was real and Rockstar Games phoned up the man who received the information from a leaker. He has now shared his story following the closure of the company put out the leak.
Rockstar flipped out. They locked down the studio to find the leaker.

What was the GTA 6 leak?
Back on March 6th 2018, YouTube Channel “The Know” (formerly and now currently known as Inside Gaming) released a video sharing details about GTA 6. These key points were sent to them by an anonymous source close to Rockstar Games. The group felt “confident” in evidence provided to them hence why they decided to publish the information.

Miami was said to be the main location of the game. Back then, a lot of GTA fans thought Vice City would be the expected so this did not win people over. In connection to the location, the game’s codename was claimed to be Project Americas.
This was the same codename that could be seen in the videos and video clip file names from the massive GTA 6 gameplay leak in 2022. The teen hacker who released these videos is currently in a indefinite hospital stay due to his crimes. This became one piece of evidence the leak from The Know was real.
The video went onto explain why the game was codenamed Project Americas. Players would be able to fly from Vice City to South America during missions. This part of GTA 6 was scrapped according to a 2022 report by Bloomberg. Rockstar decided the game needed to be reduced in scope and have since focused on just Miami and the surrounding areas. When Rockstar revealed GTA VI, we learned Vice City would be the main city with plenty of other parts in the state of Leonida.

Another piece of info that was proven correct with the gameplay leak and Rockstar’s reveal is that the game would feature a female protagonist. We now know her as Lucia. As for the targeted release year, the source claimed the aim is for around 2021-2022. That estimate is of course 3ish years off which is quite significant. Though, that original range did not see the worldwide pandemic coming.
Why has this leak resurfaced?
The Know aka Inside Gaming was owned by Rooster Teeth. On March 6th 2024, exactly 6 years after the report was put out, Rooster Teeth was shutdown by its parent company Warner Brothers. 6 years to the day… GTA 6, it writes itself.
Following the closure of Rooster Teeth and Inside Gaming, the writer of The Know episode went on the Inside Games Podcast (ex-IG employee ran channel) to discuss Rooster Teeth. Brian Gaar explained that he received the inside info from someone who confirmed their legitimacy.
It was codenamed Project Americas and you’re going to be doing drug missions to and from the US and Central South America.

Rockstar Games freak out and make a phone call

Gaar said fans thought it was not real but Rockstar “flipped out” and they “locked down”. Furthermore, a Vice President at Rockstar called Brian Gaar up. He did say the VP was nice and wanted to know who told him the GTA 6 info. Mr Gaar said he could not give up his source in which the VP said “that’s fine” and “you didn’t get everything right but you got a lot of it.”
This was super interesting to find out and just a small insight into how serious Rockstar Games take leaks. Even though Project Americas has evolved over time, it’s super interesting to find out where it was and what is ahead of us.
