Copies of GTA 6 are seemingly beginning to sell out. As we fast approach the game’s release date (we are just over a month away), the “physical” edition that’s a code in a box is running out.
Over the past day few days, the game is showing as no longer available to pre-order at a few retailers in different regions.
The biggest one is Amazon in the USA. Neither the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S code in box copy can be pre-ordered as of Sunday, October 11th. The product listing states “Currently unavailable.
We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.“
We’ve also verified that pre-orders have sold out at many Target stores in populated areas of the US. Some stores still have stock and it says “Ready on Nov 12” but it does vary depending on location. For example, LA and NYC have next to none available to be ordered at their stores with a notice saying “Preorders sold out“.
Whilst it’s possible these are listing errors, Rockstar themselves confirmed back in June that they’ve only made limited quantities of this version of the game. We reported on how the Rockstar website specifically states “while supplies last”. Perhaps Amazon will get more supply or is that it? It’ll be interesting to see if other retailers begin listing the game as out of stock over the coming weeks.
What’s The Point?

There has been plenty of people that have said “what’s the point in getting the code in box version?” There are lots! For starters, it’s typically cheaper to buy this version of the game. Retailers are undercutting the recommended retail price which is of course the digital price.
For example, Amazon UK is selling game for £65 right now, £5 less than almost anywhere else. On top of spending less money, you actually get something physical. For physical collectors or die hard fans it’s great to have something in the collection next to other GTA titles. It doesn’t cost more.
Additionally, many retailers including Amazon don’t charge you until the product ships. This means you haven’t got to pay months in advance. Unlike the PlayStation Network which takes the money immediately. There are hundreds of thousands of people that gave Rockstar and Sony their money back in June with nothing to show for it. That $70 could have been sat in your bank earning a little interest instead of helping out corporations.
