Red Dead Redemption Refunds Issued Over Upgrade Problem

Aaron TruemanBy Aaron TruemanJanuary 13, 2026
A screenshot from Red Dead Redemption shows the protagonist, John Marston, standing in the center of a dusty Western town street. He is wearing a dark cowboy hat, a vest over a light shirt, dark pants, and a bandolier of bullets across his chest. He also has a rifle slung over his shoulder and a lasso hanging from his belt. Several non-playable characters (NPCs) are visible in the background, including a woman in a long dress and a man leaning against a wooden porch.

Players have been delighted to find out they have had their Red Dead Redemption purchases refunded. Xbox have begun issuing refunds following the re-release debacle last month.

Red Dead Redemption was re-released once again offering native versions for the Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles. It featured some nice improvements for those on current gen machines.

Ahead of the launch, Rockstar announced that there would be a free, current-gen upgrade. However, it had a major issue affecting most Xbox players during its December 2nd launch and it led to massive frustration and confusion.

Whilst some Xbox users were able to claim the free upgrade from their digital Xbox 360 copy, a large, vocal group took to social media expressing lots of disappointment. When trying to claim the free upgrade in the Xbox Store, it would not have a “Free” option. It only displayed the price and needed people to buy it in order to access this Xbox Series X|S.

Rockstar and Xbox both issues statements acknowledging the issue following the user reports. A fix was rolled out gradually over the course of several days. By December 10th, everyone who owned a digital copy of the Xbox 360 version could claim the new edition for free.

    That’s Not All

Given the bug and the fact that not everyone knew about the free upgrade, quite a few people did end up paying the full amount. Now that the issue has been fixed, Xbox have begun issuing refunds.

In a Reddit post, user SaucyChief posted a screenshot of an Xbox message from Xbox themselves. It says:

“Red Dead Redemption was intended to be free for those who had previously purchased a digital copy of the original Red Dead Redemption. Due to this change your payment has been refunded. Visit account.microsoft.com to view your billing history.”

Plenty of other people shared they checked and also received the same message. This should be the final chapter on the bumpy launch that was the Xbox Series X|S free upgrade for Red Dead Redemption. Were you affected by this? Let us know down in the comments section below.
