The Max Payne Remake just received an exciting new development update from Remedy Entertainment. The Finnish studio shared the current state of the game’s production and the progress it has made since the start of 2024.

All of this information comes from Remedy’s financial statements released today for investors. Every year around August, Remedy provides a “Half-year Financial Report for January-June” and that is what we have here.

    Recap of the last update

It was in April this year that Remedy provided the previous game development update on the Max Payne Remake. The game company revealed in their Business Review document for January-March 2024, the Max Payne 1&2 remake “is expected to move into full production during the second quarter of 2024.”

In Remedy’s half year financial report for January through June, the company has revealed the Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake has entered the full production stage. This happened during the previous quarter as expected. It previously had been in the “Production Readiness” since October last year. Below is a quote by Remedy CEO Tero Virtala on the remake:

Max Payne 1&2 remake progressed from production readiness to the full production stage. The development team has been working towards developing the game to an early functional state from beginning to end.

Now we know both Max Payne games will be playable from start to finish after a couple of years working out what this remake should be like.

Due the step up in the project’s progress, development costs increased over this time last year. Last quarter saw development fees rise to €9.4 million from €7.9 million. We already know Rockstar Games are funding this in full but it appears Remedy will be paying somewhat upfront. Another thing we know from past reports by Remedy is that the remakes have a similar budget to Alan Wake 2.

    Full production details

The full production stage of Remedy’s development takes around 200 developers over 1-2 years to reach the Alpha point. This is then followed up by a Beta version lasting 3-6 months with a focus on polishing the game and squashing bugs.

Based on the fact the game has gone through each stage on the upper time estimate and has a budget as big as Alan Wake 2, we could see these remakes release in late 2026 or early 2027.

In case you missed it, Remedy shared photos of their updated office. It now has new Max Payne 2 artwork on the walls. Due do some changes in the artwork from the original game, fans have speculated that this might be the first piece of artwork from the remakes. You can learn more about this here.
