GTA V Becomes Most Watched Game On Livestreams

With GTA 6 on the horizon, GTA V was the most watched game across all livestreaming platforms in 2024. Not only did it take the crown of Twitch but it also saw substantial growth in hours watch when all platforms were combined. This is a huge feat for a game that is over 11 years old. We’ll be taking a look at the success Rockstar Games had in the livestreaming space throughout 2024 below.

Kicking things off, analytics firm Stream Hatchet confirmed this month that GTA V was the most watched game via livestreaming. This is all of the platforms combined such as Twitch and YouTube. The chart is then sorted by hours watched. GTA V racked up over 2 billion hours watched on stream in 2024. No game reached this amount.

On top of that, this is up 21.3% over 2023. That is crazy growth considering the game’s age and how popular it already was. For comparison, League of Legends came in second place with 1.8 billion hours watched and an increase of 7.2% year over year. Meanwhile Riot’s other title, Valorant, took home 1.1 billion hours at a 6% decrease.

Even just taking a look at December shows GTA V is on a whole new level. Steam Hatchet say the game was the most watched game in December with 189 million hours watched. This is up 36.9% over November and League of Legends was second with just 113m hours. LoL actually was first for half of the year but GTA V still came out on top.

Now for another report from StreamElements via Rainmaker.gg covering streaming in 2024. Firstly, let’s get 2023 and 2022 stats for comparison. The firms shared Grand Theft Auto V was the second most watched game on Twitch in terms of hours watched narrowly losing out to League of Legends in the prior 2 years.

GTA V had nearly 1.2 billion hours on Twitch in 2023 but in 2024 it rose to 1.3 billion. This had it over take League of Legends to be the most watched game on the Amazon-owned platform. This chart is done by ranking Twitch categories based on watch time hours from January to November 2024.

We can only imagine this will skyrocket once GTA VI releases. The most popular and watched streamer of 2024 was Kai Cenat and he claimed last week he’ll be doing a GTA VI marathon from launch day. You can learn more about it here.

Of course, GTA RP is the main content watched by millions of people on livestreams. That does not mean the console player base is small though. If we take a look at Circana’s weekly reports for active players, GTA V is usually 3rd on PlayStation and does not show up in the top 15 on PC.
