With GTA 6 coming out in Fall this year, some fans have wondered if Rockstar Games will continue supporting GTA Online in GTA V. We now have a suggestion of what might happen and it comes from the CEO of Rockstar Games’ parent company.
Whilst GTA Online 2 (or whatever it is called) for GTA 6 has not been announced yet, it is obvious there will be an all new online component set in Leonida. However, not everyone will buy GTA 6 right away.
A large portion of GTA Online’s player base are on PS4, PC and Xbox One meaning they will be unable to play GTA 6 and the next GTA Online until they get a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. These players have wondered if GTA V’s Online will be left and forgotten about by Rockstar. Not to mention how much time, effort and money they’ve poured into the game.
New Interview Reveals Thinking
In a new interview with IGN, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick took the question about old GTA Online support head on. He started off by explaining his answer is theoretical because GTA Online for GTA 6 has not been announced.
That said, he told the outlet “we support our properties when the consumers are involved with those titles. As an example, we launched NBA 2K Online in China, I think originally in 2012 if I’m not mistaken. And then we launched NBA 2K Online 2 in China in 2017. If I’m not mistaken. We did not sunset Online 1. They both are still in the market and they serve consumers and they’re alive and we have this massive audience.”

Some people genuinely think Rockstar would turn off the GTA Online servers for GTA V once GTA 6 comes out but that just is not logical whatsoever. Most people do not think GTA Online 1 will be sunsetted soon after the next iteration is out. Same goes for bug fixes. Of course, that is the bare minimum. Some fans would like content not just the thing continuing to exist. There’s always a possibility it gets a small amount of content, especially if there is still a large population of players on last gen and PC.
Zelnick also noted that “we’ve shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them”. This lines up with what we know about other games from various publishers. If people are spending time and money on a game and it outweighs the server and maintenance costs, the servers will remain online.
We Already Sort Of Knew This
This should not come as much surprise to GTA Online fans. Back in 2023, Rockstar Games added birthday hats for your GTA Online character. You receive these every year on the anniversary of the day you created your character. For example, day one players like myself have 1 through 11 numbered hats. In the files there are hats up to 15. If GTA 6 comes out in 2025, there will still be 3 years of hats to claim.

There are also 3 suits, bronze, silver and gold. Bronze is for 5 years, silver is for 10 and the assumption is 15 years gifts the gold suit. You can learn more about them here.
Will you still be playing GTA Online in GTA V once GTA 6 is out? Let us know down in the comments below. As for when GTA 6 will come out, Take-Two just revealed Borderlands 4’s release date and that has some big implications for when we’ll be moving from Los Santos to Vice City.
Zelnick also teased a PC release at some point plus he shut down concerns of AI and violence. The game is still targeting a Fall 2025 release and that helped surge the stock price of Take-Two.
