GTA 6 Pre-orders are what we expected

GTA 6 pre-orders have been a hot topic since before even the first trailer for the game was revealed. Many fans have been wondering when GTA VI will be available to pre-purchase. Also, some outlets have been spreading baseless rumours that Grand Theft Auto VI will be up for pre-order alongside the trailer.

This is not the case. GTA 6 is not up for pre-order despite a confirmed 2025 release. This what we personally expected based on a few factors.

PS5 and Xbox pre-orders aren’t coming anytime soon

Rockstar Games are predictable but also unpredictable in various ways. Sometimes they stick to a pattern in their marketing. For almost two decades, Rockstar Games have typically announced a major new game with a trailer.

Around 12 months later, another trailer would be dropped alongside pre-orders. This happened with GTA V for example. The game was unveiled with the iconic trailer then a year later it had a second trailer and pre-orders went live.

On top of that gaming has changed since 2011. Most games are bought digitally, primarily via the Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, Nintendo eShop, and Steam. Digital games were a big part of PC gaming culture back then but console players got the disc version for the most part.

Xbox and PlayStation DO NOT take pre-orders on their store if a game does not have an exact release date. Store pages sometimes appear but there will be no option to pre-order the game until an exact release date is confirmed by Rockstar Games.

Rockstar Games also did not issue any information on pre-orders in their statement which followed the trailer’s release as we reported on here.

In short, don’t expect Rockstar Games to let you pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI potentially for another year when they announce a provisional release date. Rockstar have a track record of announcing a date then delaying the game anyway.

This also means don’t be fooled by pre-order bonuses or pricing from bad actors spreading baseless rumours. We will report on any official pre-order information when Rockstar Games announce it.

Some shops will still take your pre-order

Even though Rockstar Games might not open pre-orders for another year, some retailers online and in-store like to get your sale early. They will take pre-orders without an official pre-order opening by Rockstar Games. Personally, putting a pre-order down for a game with no release date except for “2025” does not make much sense.
