GTA 6 Developers Dismiss Recent Rumors Surrounding Delay

GTA 6’s backend is an iteration based on previous games rather than technology built from scratch. That’s according to a new report.

Last week, we reported on what a former Rockstar Games developer said about GTA 6. Rob Carr, an audio designer who worked at Rockstar Games on games like Red Dead Redemption, GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and L.A. Noire took part in an interview and was asked for his thoughts on the new game. This is interesting given he is someone familiar with Rockstar’s development processes.

He has a theory that Rockstar “probably rebuilt the entirety” of the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). This is due to how GTA V was a few generations of consoles ago. He also added that things we see in smaller GTA V and Red Dead 2 will likely be used in a bigger way.

To find out how accurate he is, Kotaku’s Zack Zwiezen spoke with GTA 6 developers who’d know information like this. They told him that the version of RAGE found in GTA VI “builds” off the work done for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2. So the game’s engine has not been rebuilt entirely.

Dismissing A Rumour

Additionally, Kotaku’s Zack Zwiezen also used this article as an opportunity to shut down a recent viral rumour. For those unaware a gossip site claimed they had heard GTA VI was delayed due to the saving/loading feature is broken and that the game was made without it in mind. We didn’t cover it previously due to how ridiculous it is. Anyone with a brain would know this is just nonsense.

However, large social media accounts that are known for their clickbait and spreading utter rubbish regurgitated this rumour. This led to people believing it because, for some reason, whatever these accounts say plenty of people just trust it. It’s really weird how outlets can consistently spew lies and yet the readers are happy to accept it.

Anyway, Zwiezen does know from what he has heard from sources, GTA 6 will have saving and loading as you’d expect. So there’s an end to that truly terrible rumour.

The writer was the one who reported all the way back in March 2024 that sources at Rockstar believed the game could be delayed to 2026. The GTA community did not take this report well with lots of targeted posts aimed at the article and outlet bashing them for simply reporting what developers had said. Now the game is officially aiming to release in November 2026 after being moved from Fall 2025 and May 2026.
