GTA 6 Completely Changes How Stealing Cars Works

After years of waiting, today we finally got our first official look at gameplay of GTA 6. The Netflix special lasts approximately 27 minutes, with many preview from various outlets releasing as well. The amount of information coming all at once has been overwhelming, yet we’ll first take a look at the mechanic that has inspired the franchise’s name: stealing a car.

To remind you: stealing a car in previous entries of GTA were a simple endeavour: walk up to a car, press triangle and watch as your protagonists drags a poor NPC out of a car. GTA 6 will be the first entry in the series to completely overhaul this mechanic. As IGN reports in their hands-off preview, GTA 6 will feature a multi-tiered vehicle security system. Old, rusty vehicles that even Simon Yetarian wouldn’t touch will be easy to steal, while shiny sports car will require a lot more sophistication and careful approach.

WAINK Scanner

Co-studio head of Rockstar North Rob Nelson tells IGN: ‘Previously, you could just press triangle to automatically hotwire and steal any vehicle that you wanted and take off. We felt like that left a lot of potential gameplay on the table, in terms of progression and decision-making for players. I think it gives all the vehicles more meaning, and you need to pay attention to what you’re doing a bit more.’

To determine how difficult a car will be to steal you will have a scouting tool called the WAINK scanner, when you are within range of the vehicle, it will tell you it’s security tier and value. How many security tiers there are for cars is currently unknown, but some will require duplication of electronic keys. That’s not all, even when you get in a car it may be equipped with a tracker which will notify law enforcements if you drive above the speed limit.

The game will also enable you to sell whichever car you have stolen, or register it at a certain price. Both Jason and Lucia will be able to own multiple personal vehicles given they have the garage to fill them.
