The latest release of Red Dead Redemption is shaping up to be another success story for Rockstar Games and Netflix on mobile. The two companies launched 2010’s game of the year for a whole new type of device on Tuesday and fans are turning up for it based on early data.
In less than 24 hours, the game’s Netflix version has topped the overall Apple App Store charts in many countries. This includes the USA and Brazil according to Sensor Tower. In regions were it took the top step on the podium, it displaced ChatGPT. In most markets, it is in second place only behind either TikTok or ChatGPT. As for the strictly games charts, it is on top for almost all of them. It will be interesting to see how long it holds up at the very top.
Whilst it is not charting as highly on the Google Play Store, we do have some download figures. It has achieved between over 100,000 to 500,000 downloads on Android devices within the first day. As for the $39.99 version that does not require a Netflix subscription, over 100 people have purchased it on the Play Store.
Why This Is A Big Deal
One could argue Red Dead Redemption is only taking the App Store crown as it is a free download. Sure, that is the main reason. Free is free. However, you still need an active Netflix subscription to do anything with it. The streaming service boasts over 300 million monthly paying customers. That’s a lot of people! Netflix subscribers see the ability to play such a beloved game for “free” in addition to the films and TV shows they watch as a nice perk.
With Red Dead as a franchise selling over 107 million copies as of last month and only 28 million of those being the first game, this is a big opportunity for Rockstar. Lots of people who may have only played Red Dead Redemption 2 or none at all can jump in on their phone or tablet. Most people own a smartphone but not a console or PC.
This port is also really well done too. It looks and plays great. The graphics are sharp and performance is smooth. There’s a 30FPS and 60FPS toggle for those that have a preference for higher FPS or higher resolution. The game’s UI and menus have been made for mobile allowing for easier navigation. The cherry on top is the new icons that were drawn by artists for the touch controls.
