Rockstar Games may not be bringing back text chat to GTA Online in the Enhanced version any time soon but they are still actively working on it. We also might have an idea when that will be. This is all according to well-known insider Tez2.
The Situation
GTA V Enhanced for PC released near the start of the year and has been criticised since day one by fans for missing a key feature: in-game text chat. Text chat in GTA Online lobbies is essential for communication with randoms when doing jobs.
Rockstar Support told players who complained back then it was not supported at launch. After that, a note from a developer at Rockstar was found saying “text chat option not yet added to Gen9. Coming soon” in the pause menu file found in the game. Since then, many updates to GTA V Enhanced have been made by Rockstar but none have contained the return of text chat.
Coming With Mansions?
However, Tez has had his say. On the GTA Forums, Tez shared that Rockstar have been tweaking the restrictions of the original PC version of GTA V now named Legacy. These changes were made during May and August in updates. Tez speculates the testing done with these parameters “may shape” just how strict text chat in GTA V Enhanced ends up being.
On top of that, Tez shares text chat will be disabled by default anyway in countries that will require age verification such as the UK. We previously reported on Tez’s datamining that revealed age verification is coming to GTA Online at some point.
As we know, Xbox will be enforcing age verification in select regions at the start of 2026. Tez wonders if Rockstar will be bringing in the age verification system to various countries in the expected December GTA Online update. This will likely be the one that features mansions and be the send off for GTAV/GTA Online before GTA 6. Hopefully text chat does return as players have grown increasingly frustrated.

The only restriction for GTA V Legacy text chat I experienced so far was the word “retard(ed)”.
But you can still call your teammates idiots tho…
