Rockstar Games have given the actor behind Franklin Clinton permission to use his iconic character in his own GTA RP server.
Shawn Fonteno, who provided the voice and performance capture for Franklin in GTA V and GTA Online recently launched his own GTA RP server. Titled “Franklin’s World”, this is a server built on FiveM for fans of Franklin Clinton to come and play with Shawn himself. We covered the server announcement back in August and it launched not too long after.
How the deal came about
In a Tweet, Mr Fonteno shared a clip from a recent interview where he talks about his GTA RP server. He talks about how Rockstar Games gave him permission to use the character he plays in the server and on the branding.
I started my own server called Franklin’s World and Rockstar gave me the permission to use Franklin in my own server. I want to do it (GTA RP) but can I use Franklin? They had to go to the table and come back and say “yeah you can use it and we support it, we’ll let you use Franklin”.Shawn Fonteno
Rockstar Games and Take-Two are very protective of their IP and state you can’t infringe on their creations. This includes “making new games, stories, missions, or maps” according to their GTA RP policy. It’s really good to see that the actor of one of their characters has been allowed to make use of it. On top of that, hats off to Shawn for asking them upfront before launching.
Server shut down for other reasons
Unfortunately, there have been some technical issues on the server so it is currently undergoing a rework. Before it went offline, Shawn streamed some of his sessions on his Twitch channel which you can watch here.
We had to shut it down. We had a developer who was a little different, a strange dude. He was acting different, being wild and mean. A dictator. I had to terminate our deal but upon terminating it he sabotaged my server. I don’t know this world. I spent the money saying “I trust you, build this for me.”Shawn Fonteno
Shawn goes onto say he wanted to continue roleplaying but the developer shut it down and deleted it all. However, he’s got a new developer in charge who is working on bringing it back.
