Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition has received a new re-release on Nintendo Switch and it has left some fans upset.
We reported last week how fans noticed this new version was on its way. Due to a change in the cover art, speculation was rife over if all 3 games in the GTA Trilogy would be included fully on the cart and no download required as it has been since release.
The reason for this re-release is that Rockstar Games have taken over publishing of the GTA Trilogy on Switch. Nintendo were the previous publishers. The price of the new release is quite a bit cheaper than the one that has been on the market since 2021 too. It retails at $29.99 / £24.99 vs the previous price of $59.99 / £54.99. That’s half the price.
Many excited fans quickly rushed to order this release from Amazon.com and other retailers. After all, the Amazon listing featured a cover art without the “Download required” banner. This suggested to fans the trilogy would come complete on cart for the first time. No Vice City being left out. All patched up and in a good state after the controversial launch.

Interestingly, cover art on listings of this re-release in Europe actually had a different banner: the dreaded “Download Code Only. No game card is included!”
Too Good To Be True
Unfortunately, fans who have begun receiving the “new version” have shared their disappointment on social media. The box art was a mistake on Amazon and has since been updated to be accurate to what fans have got in the mail.
The physical box has a “Download required. See back.” banner as first spotted by Twitter user @ToyConGarageVR. They also confirmed Vice City is a required download like before. They also provided images of the cart itself which is unchanged from the original release back in 2021.
So there you have it, the mystery has been solved. A mistake was made on Amazon which led to many people getting their hopes up.
