Having just recovered from the big report that leaked GTA 6 details such as the location and protagonists, another source has shed light on early plans for the game for us. During the Bloomberg report about Grand Theft Auto VI and studio culture, it mentioned the game was set to be be larger than any previous Rockstar titles. The scale would be immense, featuring large areas of North and South America but it has been scaled down. That is all we knew about the previous iteration of GTA VI, until now.
4 players, 3 cities
According to Stephen Totilo of Axios, Rockstar Games originally had planned “four protagonists and three cities“. This is why the codename for the game is “Project Americas“. This new bit of info was shared to Axios Gaming by a source close to Rockstar which adds to what Bloomberg previously mentioned.
Unfortunately no more details on what cities were being worked in early stages of GTA 6’s development have been revealed. However, it would be safe to speculate Vice City would be one of those locations given it is the now the main location of the game. It is entirely possible the 2 playable main characters in the Bloomberg report are also from the earlier version of the game. Either way, Rockstar has halved the playable protagonist count which many would say is a good thing. The 3 way story mode introduced in GTA V was controversial. Many liked the new take on story mode but plenty of others preferred sticking to just one character.
Our take
Something many of us GTA players have wanted for some time now is the ability to travel from one city to another e.g. Los Santos to Liberty City. Whilst it is disappointing to hear that we’re no longer getting 3 cities at launch, I am optimistic based on a couple of things.
A lot of fans have been longing for a return to the fictional Miami setting and we are getting that plus its “surrounding areas”. Bloomberg do add that the game will have more interior locations than any previous GTA game which can give us more new experiences. They follow on from this by saying Rockstar will update the map on a regular basis over time with apparently new cities. So even though we’re not getting them on day 1, we could see a return to Liberty City or somewhere completely new post launch.
Rockstar did make a new island, Cayo Perico, for GTA Online back in 2020. Even though you can’t fly a plane manually over to it, there is some precedent for a new play space after GTA 6 does come out. With the help of next gen consoles, I think a new city or island will be handled better and have less limitations that Cayo Perico currently has.
