The Max Payne Remakes have just received a new development update from Remedy Entertainment. They have revealed whereabouts it is in development right now and when to expect to see more movement on the project.
It has been over a year since Remedy and Rockstar Games announced a next-gen remake of Max Payne 1 and 2. In the last 12 months there is been no updates on the game aside from last month. Remedy stated at that moment in time it was still in “the concept development stage” since 2022. It also had “small team focused on the core of any successful product, the gameplay.” The good news though is that it is now out of “the concept development stage”.
Next stage for the remakes have begun
In their latest business review for investors for January to March 2023, Remedy took time to reveal the progress they’ve made on all their projects. Alongside the highly anticipated Alan Wake 2 and Control 2, the Max Payne remakes got a mention. Remedy’s post states the remakes have progressed to the “proof-of-concept stage.
Max Payne 1&2 remake has progressed well and during the first quarter the project moved into the proof-of-concept stage. The development team has worked efficiently in proving the key elements of what Max Payne is all about and in bringing the game in high quality to today’s consoles and PCs. We expect the project to keep advancing well and with that, the team size will expand gradually towards year-end.

New pieces of information here include it is how the small team have worked well to bring to life the core mechanics of what makes Max Payne great. We already know the remakes are happening on Remedy’s game proprietary Northlight engine. This allows Remedy to take full advantage of the new hardware without being limited by the old consoles and PC hardware.
According to the statement, the game is set to continue making good progress over the course of 2023. By the end of this year they expect the small team will expand “gradually” which is normal for this stage.
When to expect the remakes to release?
Thanks to the transparency of Remedy, we have an idea on how development for their games are intended to go. They have a process called Stage Gate. They share all of the stages that go into making a game and their expected timeline. As we mentioned earlier, the Max Payne Remakes just exited the concept stage and are now in the proof-of-concept stage. This chart claims its current stage should take 3-6 months. Production readiness is after that which can take the same amount of time. Assuming the current and next stage take 6 months each then the game will enter full production in April 2024. Full production is expected to take 1-2 years plus an additional 6 months or so for polish.
This could mean the Max Payne 1 and 2 remakes may not hit our consoles and PCs until 2026-2027. Stay tuned to RockstarINTEL for any news updates on the Max Payne remakes.
