GTA V had a huge month in May according to PlayStation as well as sales charts. Not to far behind was Red Dead Redemption 2 which also did well once again. In this article we’ll be taking a look at details provided by PlayStation and other industry sources that have access to the sales data.
PS4 gamers keep coming back to GTA V
Last month saw GTA V become the 3rd most downloaded PS4 game in the USA, Canada and Europe. This is an increase from 5th place in April in North America. It did drop down from 2nd place in Europe but it is only 1 place. Despite no new content updates and the next gen PS5 version, last gen gamers just keep playing GTA V and nothing is slowing it down. In contrast, following the release of the next gen PS5 version in March, it slipped out of the top 20 in NA and down to 17th in Europe. Another factor to note here is that this does not include GTA Online downloads. Until June 14th, GTA Online has been free for all PS+ users and it is likely many players are only downloading GTA Online and not the GTA V Story Mode.
Meanwhile in the UK sales charts, GTA V was the 4th best selling game last month. As reported by gamesindustry.biz using data released by GSD, GTA V was pushed down to 4th place by the newer mega hits Nintendo Switch Sports and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Despite slipping, it is still holding its own against other new titles. These charts include both digital and physical disc sales in the UK. It is worth noting that no big new games were released in this period.
Red Dead 2 keeps on moving despite no updates
Red Dead Redemption 2, the beloved Rockstar title from 2018, was downloaded quite a lot according to Sony’s official charts. It ended the month of May in 5th place for Canada and the US whereas it was 7th in Europe. It has risen up from 9th place in NA but dropped from 5th place in Europe.
The classic might have released in 2018 and the online segment has been neglected by Rockstar but RDR2 is still selling a ton of copies every month. Many new games that players praise highly are outsold by the western masterpiece. It has been over 300 days since Red Dead Online received a content update so our new featured article delves into the issues facing the RDO Community.
