Rockstar Games are notorious for being secretive about production on their games. Some would say they are the most secretive game studio in the world. So much so that 20 years after release, they were upset at a former director.
He shared some behind the scenes information about GTA III, Vice City and San Andreas a few months ago and within days Rockstar indicated him to stop and he removed his blog posts. This is why it’s surprising to hear a behind the scenes of GTA V was actually being made at one point.
A making of GTA V documentary was being filmed during the game’s development by Rockstar Games according to the iconic trio of actors who led the game’s story. This was ultimately canned so the group revealed details on this project.
The 3 protagonists are back together
It has been quite some time since Ned Luke (Michael De Santa), Shawn Fonteno (Franklin Clinton), and Steven Ogg (Trevor Phillips) were all together. Ned and Shawn have continued to do comic-con meets and signings but only recently has Steven re-joined the crew for public appearances.
Their most recent event together was an autograph signing with the service Streamily. Fans could request their autograph on various prints and then watch them sign the items on a live stream. In partnership with Streamily, the trio also did a Q&A livestream to the general public hosted by Streamily exec Rob Fury.
Details on the cancelled GTA V documentary
Spotted by @GameRollGTA on Twitter, during the Q&A the panel discussed the game’s production from their role and how it was to work on it. Ned got the ball rolling on the behind the scenes doc by saying “What’s nuts is we had that behind the scenes camera going the whole time and they never did anything with it. That would have been gold”.
Steven follows it up by saying “I think at one point, didn’t we discuss like how cool to make the making of… so at this point we’d have the documentary on the making of GTA”. Mr Luke said it was “so funny” on set.
Fans no doubt would have loved this unpreceded look at GTA V’s set with his colourful cast of characters and when the actors get out of character. On one hand, Rockstar’s secrecy is something people like. On the other, it limits how much cool stuff we know. You can watch the full Q&A here which we’d recommend doing if you’re interested in learning about the trio’s experience making GTA V.
Funnily enough, it was just a few days ago that a rare blooper and outtakes from Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption 2 were discovered. Audio clips on-set of the game with Arthur and Dutch can be heard in these newly unearthed files. You can listen to the closeted behind the scenes clips of a modern Rockstar Games title here.
Streamily’s next GTA signing event is with Lamar’s actor Slink Johnson. You can purchase your autograph from Slink here with our affiliate link. Disclosure: We receive a small commission on each order to help support our website.
