Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition is getting a new release on Nintendo Switch. This might mean all 3 games of the GTA Trilogy will be included fully on the cart. No download required. That’s the speculation from fans on social media at least.
When the game came out in 2021 to much controversy, the Switch version required some downloading. Most of GTA III and Andreas were on the cart but updates are required. It was patched many times including a big one last year. This eliminated most of the issues fans had.
Meanwhile Vice City was not present on the card past the splash screen. So a cart with all 3 games patched up is an enticing purchase for fans especially for those who just purchased a Nintendo Switch 2. All 3 games work great on the new system with improved frame rates.
A New Release?
First spotted by Twitter account @Switch2Stock, they noticed a new Amazon listing for the GTA Trilogy on Switch with cover art without the “Download required” banner. As you can see from the covers below, there is no banner on the new one compared to the old one.

This naturally raised a lot of questions. Is a new version actually coming with the full 3 games on cart? Well, the situation is not so clear as of yet and there are some twist and turns to get through.
What Is Happening?
It turns out, Rockstar have taken over publishing of the GTA Trilogy on Switch from Nintendo. This means a new release is coming. The price of the new release is far cheaper than the one that has been on the market since 2021. It will retail at $29.99 / £24.99 vs the previous price of $59.99 / £54.99.
So far, only North American versions of this new release is missing the “Download required” banner. Cover art on listings in Europe for example now have the disappointing “Download Code Only. No game card is included!” banner.
Canadian retailer Video Games Plus issued a statement saying they will be selling it and the ESRB NA version does indeed include a cart. However, they do not know if the entire trilogy is on the cart. It could be a mistake on the packaging. It does seem like there will be two new releases, one for North America and another for the rest of the world.

This new version has an Amazon.com release date of July 25th and it is currently out of stock. You can view it here. Obviously, we are in August now. Some people have ordered the new release from Amazon and they’ve been given a delivery date of August 25th-September 9th so stay tuned for the big reveal… (Note: the Amazon links are affiliate links so if you use them we’ll receive a small commision to help keep this site going.)
It will be interesting to see how this situation pans out. Hopefully Rockstar Games have put all 3 games on the cart and fully updated it but it might just remain a dream.
In other recent GTA Trilogy news, the GTA III Definitive Edition on mobile entered GTA+. You can learn more about that here.
