Perhaps not surprising: no fanbase is better at digging through released trailers and footage with a set of eagle eyes like the Rockstar Games community. And with the recent release of trailer 2, it’s been no different. You may think a nearly three minute trailer and over 70 screenshots would settle us down for a bit, but no less is true. Fans have pointed out evidence suggesting Jason Duval, the recently confirmed protagonist for GTA 6, has some form of connection to the police, or may even be a police officer. Let’s break down all the evidence.
Jason may be working with the feds
The evidence starts with trailer two. Around a minute in you can see Jason visiting a prison to pick up Lucia, as she is set free and sat out her jail time. When he approaches the bailiff, the bailiff seems to recognise Jason: “Have I seen you here before?”. The first thought might be that Jason was inmate and served time for crimes he did himself, his response is rather iffy however: “You might have”. It would surprise no-one if it turned out Rockstar is intentionally attempting to mislead us. A scene later on gives us the clearest sign, and possibly most obvious sign. Gang members seem to stand up to Jason and accusing him directly of what is being speculated: “Yo D this fool a fed”?
A new screenshot has pointed us further in this direction, showing Jason wearing body armor that closely resembles a SWAT police vest. Supporting this theory is a scene from the first trailer, where we briefly see someone from behind, wearing what appears to be the same cap, t-shirt and buzzcut. While we can’t say for certain that it’s him, the similarities are hard to ignore.
Jason’s newly released background story on Rockstar’s official website may also connect some dots. It was revealed Jason served in the military. His combat skills and physique would be suited to pursue a new career in law enforcement, though in a GTA game, it’s unlikely to be a clean and fair job.

A familiar pattern
It’s important to note that Rockstar Games almost always puts their protagonist front and center in a majority of the cutscenes. Even cutscenes featuring antagonists always have the protagonist present, such as in Red Dead Redemption 2 with the Pinkterton’s. It’s unlikely Jason or Lucia aren’t present in any of the scenes shown in both trailers, making Jason being present at the police raid more likely.
This wouldn’t be Rockstar’s first endeavour into making a protagonist work together with law enforcement. In Red Dead Redemption 1 protagonist John Marston was forced to work together with the Pinkerton detective agency to hunt down his ex-gang members. In GTA 5, Michael, Franklin and Trevor performed multiple heists for the FIB (parody of, you guessed it: FBI). Would it therefore be surprising if GTA 6 took inspiration to tell a deeper, more grounded story that explores the conflicts between being a cop and being seduced by a criminal girlfriend who grew up in a tough environment? Probably not.
It’s important to always keep a grain of salt when it comes to speculation and theories about story details for GTA 6. Rockstar has shown in the past that they are masters at misleading their audience, and it could easily turn out entirely not true.
