GTA Online for GTA 6 won’t have dedicated servers according to credible Rockstar Games insider TezFunz2. Servers have been a constant talking point since the infamous launch of GTA Online back in 2013. Many players have speculated what sort of improvements Rockstar’s next title will introduce to help alleviate issues they face.
This latest supposed information about the next instalment in the GTA series comes from Tez who the GTA community holds in high regard in terms of accuracy. Of course, anything we discuss in this article is not official from Rockstar themselves. We still stress this is purely a rumour at this point though as it is not coming from Rockstar publicly but apparent sources at the company.
Dedicated Servers decided against
In a new post on a GTA Forums thread about GTA 6 Online, Tez claims Rockstar Games pitched dedicated servers. However, this was shot down by Take-Two Interactive, their parent company.
The reason behind this is the cost. Dedicated servers are far more expensive than peer-to-peer connections. Many will argue Take-Two make so much from GTA Online that they should let this happen.
It was only recently Take-Two expect to earn over $8 billion in the next fiscal year. This is much higher than previous years likely down to the launch of GTA 6 and GTA 6 Online. Take-Two’s CEO was quizzed on live TV if GTA VI was the reason but laughed it off.
It’s far more complex than most of us know
This conversation has a lot more nuance than just dedicated servers or none. Networking is a complicated area of games development. It is not all doom and gloom if GTA 6 Online does not use purely dedicated servers. GTA Online actually uses a mix of both peer-to-peer and dedicated servers as a hybrid.
On top of that we saw meaningful improvements made by Rockstar in Red Dead Online compared to GTA Online. RDO also makes use of the hybrid setup. More details on networking for Rockstar’s titles can be found in the same thread with a post by GTA Forums admin spider-vice.
One thing that remains clear is fans would like Rockstar come out of the gate with stronger protection from hacking and a more stable online experience. The launch of the next generation of GTA Online will be a huge undertaking for Rockstar Games.
Whilst it would be counteractive for Rockstar to reveal all of their hand before GTA VI Online launches, some notable improvements that won’t allow hackers a lot to work with would go a long way for the community.
Tez does go onto say Rockstar Games “keeps adding checks to explosion native functions” in new GTA Online updates. We’ll keep an eye out for any more changes that make their way into the current iteration of GTA Online.
