Cfx.re, the Rockstar Games-owned team behind FiveM have issued a statement following reports of major security issues with the platform. Earlier in August, we reported on how several members of the FiveM community had grown frustrated by the Rockstar Games-owned crew running the platform. There had been a variety of vulnerabilities discovered that could be fatal.
This comes after a report alleged many issues taking place behind the scenes since before Rockstar purchased the GTA RP platform and how they are said to have handled it since.
One of those problems involved piracy. Community members spotted flaws in the Asset Escrow licensing system. By that time, bad actors had already exploited the problem for their own gain.
Fan-made content that cost real money to purchase and use was allegedly being stolen for sharing or even reselling. This of course is a terrible situation for those who have had their work stolen and repackaged.
Cfx.re Statement
This brings us to Cfx.re’s statement. They have directly addressed the asset stealing in a post on their blog. You can check it out in full below:
Recently, we identified a security issue in our asset escrow system that allowed bad actors to extract encrypted assets from the game client and bypass the safeguards designed to prevent those assets from being used by servers without the permission of the original creator.
We take the security of our platform extremely seriously, and our team is working to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. A big thank you to all FiveM community members who reached out to alert us to the issue – we are, as always, grateful for your vigilance and support.
While we work on a fix, we are immediately implementing two-week suspensions to all servers who are confirmed to have used leaked assets without authorization from the original creator. Moving forward, any servers caught with leaked assets again will be permanently terminated. As a reminder, only Tebex-accredited creators are authorized resellers of FiveM and RedM assets. Please ensure any creators are Tebex accredited before making a purchase.
We will continue to sweep for offending servers alongside any related enforcement actions – meanwhile, we will post any updates as we work to resolve the issue.
So a fix has not been put in place yet but it will be in due course. Action will be taken as well on those who took advantage of the exploit. That includes permanent closure of such servers.
As for the other security issues, we’ll have to wait and see what Cfx.re and Rockstar do. Be sure to stay tuned to RockstarINTEL for any GTA 6 and FiveM news updates.
