The first trailer for a film that has been entirely shot in GTA Online has just released. It will even be available to watch in cinemas near you soon.
GRAND THEFT HAMLET is said to be an “hilarious and profoundly moving story” about two actors who play GTA Online during the pandemic. They attempt to perform Shakespeare’s Hamlet at the Vinewood Bowl in Los Santos. Of course, GTA Online lobbies are notoriously crazy places so this is a difficult task.
The story so far
We previously covered this 89 minute documentary film when it was unveiled for its premiere at the famous SXSW film festival. Since then, it gained quite a few glowing reviews from critics. Grand Theft Hamlet won best Documentary Feature at SXSW. This earned it a global rights deal a few months later.
The film has also been shown at a few other film events since. It is was of the Official Selection for the Vancouver International Film Festival and CPH:DOX. We have been wondering when we’d be able to check out this film for ourselves and we won’t have to wait much longer.
This unique film was written and directed by Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane. Sam is also one of the leading stars. Heralding from the UK, the team are premiering at their home during the BFI London Film Festival on October 15th.
Grand Theft Hamlet Release
As the year comes to a close, MUBI has confirmed the unusual production will be coming soon to cinemas in the USA. It will also be available to stream worldwide. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it will release in early 2025.
UPDATE October 15th: A release in UK cinemas has now been confirmed for December 6th. Screen Daily report that Tull Stories acquired the rights to a theatrical release across the UK and Ireland.
There are no further details yet for which cinemas will be showing it nor where it will be streaming. Once those pieces of information are out, we’ll be sure to cover it here at RockstarINTEL.
